02 · Streaming Live

This stream has no streaming company behind it.

The demo

Play a stream recorded over Swarm: a Community Call, the Tokyo talks, or the Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress from Mon 2 Nov. Then open Behind the scenes.

What it is

Live video goes into Swarm segment by segment as it airs, so the stream is archived while it plays. Viewers watch through a gateway, their own Bee node, or a Swarm node running in the browser tab.

Behind the scenes

How it works

  1. A broadcaster streams from OBS or ffmpeg to an ingest server (SRS or OvenMediaEngine) over RTMP or SRT.
  2. An uploader cuts the stream into HLS segments and writes each one to Swarm as it airs, so the archive builds itself.
  3. A Swarm feed lists the streams and points to the newest playlist. The player follows the feed.
  4. Viewers play it from a gateway, their own Bee node, or a node in the browser tab. Full HD through light nodes runs at about 10–15 s latency.
  5. Swarm HLS Stream v3 (September) added adaptive bitrate and crash recovery.

Where it has run

  • Swarm Community Calls, streamed over Swarm since 27 Aug (scc.swarm.bzz.link; next call 29 Oct).
  • Valley of the Commons.
  • Tokyo, September: privacy and Web3 events.
  • Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress (Web3Privacy Now), Mumbai, Mon 2 Nov: livestreamed over Swarm with in-browser node tech.
  • All recordings: streamoverswarm.eth.limo
Say it straight

Live. Freedom's in-browser streaming is still in open pull requests and not yet tested end to end, and at the live edge a gateway still serves most new segments.
